Some Medicinal Use of Roses


Some people start grumbling because roses have thorns; but I am thankful that thorn had roses.

The rose is sensual, evocative and evokes the spirit of love in the heart and mind. Rose is a classic aphrodisiac because it affects both mind and body in a synergetic manner. The fragrance of roses is warm and intense, immensely rich and rosy.


Roses have been important since ancient times in the preparation and used in food, medicines, cosmetics, ritual and perfumery. It is known that the Greeks and the Persians and others had employed many kinds of roses as medicines. In 77 AD the roman diarist recorded more than 30 disorders that could be cured with different roses.

Key constituent and their uses

Rose contains vitamins A, B, C, D and E. It works as antioxidants, ant trivial and decrectric. Rose petals were included in the British pharmacopoeia as an astringent. They make an excellent fragment jam most notably from the damask rose, which is popular in Bulgaria.

Key medicinal uses

Internally- The herb is used to stimulate the liver, increase the appetite and improve the blood circulation. Rose hips herbal tea is full of nutrients that we need to maintain  for optimum health. It strengthens the immune system and can help prevent cold and flu due to high vitamin C content.

Externally – Rose water can be used as an eye wash or mouth wash. It can also be used to treat acne and irritated skin. In ayurvedic medicine, infusions is used on inflammations and for wound poultices. It can be used to wash surgical incisions or in compressions.

Other uses- The herb is also used as an essential oil in aroma therapy for anxiety and depression. Infused oil can be used in massage to ease pain, soothe nerves and relieve stress. It can also be used in jams, jellies and syrups.

Rosehips also contain corticoid pigments, plant sterols and a very high level of anthocynanis and other polyphenolics known as Photochemical to protect against cancer and other cardiovascular disease. They also contain up to 5% by weight of pectin, a soluble fiber that protects against cardio vascular disease. The rose hips are also useful in the treatment of influenza and likewise infections and diahorreoa in addition, because of various flavanoids, coupled with vitamin C.

Well normally we don’t know that roses, which are symbol of love and romance, can help us to fight various and hazardous diseases like cancer and keep our body fit glowing and healthy.
